3 whole-home water treatment options
Not all water softeners are the same. Here's a plain-English breakdown of your three main options โ we'll help you pick the right one after testing your water on-site.
What water softener systems look like
Here are a few examples of the systems we install. Each setup is sized to your home's water usage and hardness level.

Softener with Resin Media & Brine Tank

Softener with Carbon Filtration Tank

Standard Softener System
Upflow Water Softeners
Water flows up through the resin tank, which means regeneration uses less salt and less water. The resin bed stays cleaner longer, giving you better soft water between cycles.
Best for
- Homeowners who want to use less salt
- Homes with moderate-to-high water usage
- Anyone wanting a more efficient system
Pros
- Uses up to 75% less salt than traditional downflow
- Less water wasted during regeneration
- Cleaner resin bed = longer system life
- Great for Utah's hard water levels
Things to consider
- Slightly higher upfront cost than basic downflow
- Less common โ we'll walk you through it
Downflow Water Softeners
The classic water softener design. Water flows down through the resin tank. Reliable, proven, and widely available. A solid choice for most homes that want soft water at a straightforward price.
Best for
- Budget-conscious homeowners
- Replacing an existing softener
- Homes with standard water usage
Pros
- Lower upfront cost
- Simple, proven design
- Easy to service and maintain
- Works well for most homes
Things to consider
- Uses more salt per regeneration cycle
- Slightly less efficient than upflow
- Resin can compact over time
Whole-Home Carbon Filtration Tanks
A carbon tank filters chlorine, chloramines, sediment, and other chemicals from every faucet in your home โ not just the drinking water. Often paired with a softener for a complete water treatment solution.
Best for
- Homes on city water with chlorine taste/smell
- Anyone wanting clean water at every tap
- Pairing with a softener for full treatment
Pros
- Removes chlorine, chemicals & odors whole-home
- Protects your softener resin from chlorine damage
- Better tasting water from every faucet
- Low maintenance โ media lasts years
Things to consider
- Doesn't soften water on its own (pair with softener)
- Requires space for an additional tank
- Media needs periodic replacement
WaterDrop RO System โ Clean Drinking Water Without the Bulk
Traditional reverse osmosis systems take up the entire cabinet under your sink. The WaterDrop RO system is a compact, tankless design that fits neatly under the sink โ leaving you full use of your cabinet space while still delivering filtered, great-tasting drinking water straight from the tap.

WaterDrop RO systems โ compact, tankless, and space-saving

Water softener FAQs
Everything you need to know before choosing a water treatment system for your home.
Both soften your water by removing calcium and magnesium through a resin tank. The difference is direction: upflow systems push water up through the resin, which is more efficient โ using up to 75% less salt and less water during regeneration. Downflow is the traditional design, still reliable and a great option at a lower upfront cost. We'll recommend which makes more sense based on your water usage and budget.
A whole-home carbon tank filters chlorine, chloramines, chemicals, and odors from every tap in your house โ not just drinking water. If you're on city water and notice a chlorine taste or smell, it's worth considering. It also protects your softener's resin from chlorine damage, which can extend the life of your softener. Many homeowners pair a carbon tank with a softener for a complete water treatment setup.
A WaterDrop reverse osmosis system is an under-sink drinking water filter. Unlike traditional RO systems that have a large pressure tank taking up your entire cabinet, the WaterDrop is a compact, tankless design. It filters your drinking water at the tap โ removing chlorine, heavy metals, and other contaminants โ while leaving your under-sink cabinet space usable. It's a great add-on to a whole-home softener if you want the best drinking water quality.
They do different things. A carbon filter removes chemicals and improves taste/smell. A water softener removes the hardness minerals (calcium and magnesium) that cause scale buildup, dry skin, and appliance damage. If you have hard water โ which most of Salt Lake City does โ a softener is the solution. Many homes benefit from both: a softener for hardness and a carbon tank or RO for drinking water quality.
Most water softener installs take 1โ2 hours. We'll test your water first, install the system in your basement, closet, or mechanical room, and walk you through how to maintain the salt levels. We'll also show you how to check that it's working correctly.
Every water softener installation comes with a 5-year warranty, plus 1-year coverage for parts and labor on warranty service calls. We'll provide receipts and warranty documentation after the install.
